One aspect that most of us enjoy about summer is taking some well-earned time off. Taking a vacation gives us the chance to do things we don’t do at other times of the year. I like to say that a vacation is a time not just for recreation, but also for “re-creation.” Spending time doing things we enjoy with those near and dear to us allows us to re-create ourselves so we can enrich our lives and the lives of others.
In this issue of the Vision, we see how the College, students and alumni are busy re-creating themselves in order to take advantage of new opportunities for growth and enrichment.
We read how the positive impact our Distinguished Alumni have had on their communities. We see how a dedicated group of students exceed the expectations of others, thereby exceeding their own. We discover how a single scholarship to a disadvantaged young man 70 years ago ignited a passion for learning and inspiration. We also learn how SCC’s new computer animation program will inspire a new generation of creatives and equip them with the skills to succeed.
As SCC continues to stretch our resources in these challenging economic times, we too must re-create ourselves so that we can continue to accomplish our mission. We spent the past year identifying the needs of everyone we serve: students, communities, business, industry, alumni and staff. We used the feedback you gave us to develop a new strategic plan. This plan will serve as our road map to the future. For all who participated in our planning process, thank you. Without you, we would not be where we are today, nor could we get to where we want to go tomorrow.
Summer in Iowa is filled with long, warm, colorful days just waiting to be enjoyed. I hope you will take some time to re-create. The things you learn may just surprise you.
