AlumNotes features those alumni who contact us. Some tell us what they've been up to since graduation, some share their stories of their time here, others just want to say hi.

Three generations of the Hawes family have benefited from Keokuk Community College and Southeastern Community College. KCC offered me (a young wife and mother) the hope of two years of college required for a teaching certificate. My husband Bob enrolled later at KCC on the G.I. Bill and played on the Komets baseball team. Children Dan and Sonia, then grandchildren Trent and Justin all attended SCC. There is gratitude to SCC for their presence in the community.

Thanks for the birthday card! It was a nice reminder of school days. I am no longer Nursing due to my ripe old age of 84. The experience of RN Nursing was the highlight of my life. I also have two grandsons that are from your school: Audie Brown and Les Shaw.

I attended SCC in the early 1980’s and took some art classes there. In one of those classes, I did some silk screening and from those blocks, I made my first quilt. That was the start of my career in quiltmaking. In 1986 I was certified as a quilt judge and started teaching quilting across the U.S. I have now written 9 books on quiltmaking, and for the past 14 years have been the Executive Show Director for the American Quilter’s Society in Paducah, Ky. This is the largest quilting organization in the world with members in every U.S. state and in 80 other countries…And to think it all started right there in Burlington, IA. |
Your recent comments on the history of SCC as featured in the HawkEye were very much appreciated...May I, however, add a couple points? 1) The name of the college was officially changed from Burlington Junior College to Burlington College (even though it remained a two-year institution) in 1955. 2) Burlington College was granted North Central Association accreditation for the first time in March 1955. Prior to that date the school held only state accreditation.

It has been a long time since I talked to you on the phone. After graduating from SCC in 1980, I went to school in 1988-89 at the University of Ozarks in Clarksville, AR and graduated in ’92 with a BA in Art. I draw, paint and color and I draw a lot of quilt patterns. I will be 80 on Nov. 14. |
