When I enrolled at Southeastern Community College, it was in the Graphic Communication program. My first semester I took an Introduction to Computers class at the same time I took one of the major software classes that was pertinent to my certification in the design industry. Needless to say, it was overwhelming and frustrating.
One thing that is not made clear at SCC in the beginning is accessing the college network, Hawknet. For instance, I had been enrolled for nearly a year and working as a lab monitor before I knew that in order to access Hawknet, one must type their whole email address, for instance, mine: kkboomershine@scciowa.edu and then your password. Simple, once you know.
The SCC system also makes me crazy with the whole lock out system. After hours people who get locked out cannot access the college network until calling the college and placing a request to unlock the account. That is really un-handy when trying to access an online class. Should this happen to you this may be circumvented by directly logging onto to ICCOC web site. There is a link on the current student page.
Another thing that I think would be beneficial to SCC is some common communication system which is kept up to date. For instance, what were the results of the Student Art Show? There was an opening reception, but most of us were not aware of when that reception was, because we were not informed. We have the MISCC, the SCC current students web page whose information is not typically current, and the bulletin board system. Myself, as a student, I check email and current student page often throughout the day, so that seems like the most advanced and common communication tool. Teacher announcements of what is happening on campus that day, before class starts would be a nice reminder also.
On a more positive note: SCC offers a great selection of classes. Being a knowledge seeker, I am often pulled in many directions. I began the Graphic Communications program, became interested in the IT program, and now am being sucked in by the new Animation program being offered this fall. My sensible side says move on, but my curious, learning side says: enroll in the Animation program, it's something you've always been interested in.
Well, it seems as if my future is a roll of the dice. I'll let you know what happens, so tune in. My blogging gig here at SCC will be ending, but I intend to get my own typepad account and continue blogging, so add me to your favorites. I also have a web site under construction: kimfix - a web site dedicated to all things KIM. lol. I'll post a link when I get it up and going.
Enjoy the sunshine peeps!
